In a recent interview with India Today, veteran cricketer Robin Uthappa addressed the controversy surrounding Sanju Samson‘s exclusion from the Indian ODI squad for the upcoming tour of Sri Lanka. Despite scoring a century in his last ODI against South Africa in Paarl, Samson is again omitted from the lineup. However, he has been included in the T20I squad for the series starting on July 27, 2024.
Uthappa called for patience and understanding toward the new leadership and team management under the guidance of head coach Gautam Gambhir. Uthappa said that Sanju has gone through with the similar things before, and he has to wait for his opportunity.
“From Sanju’s perspective, this is not the first time he has faced such uncertainty, and it likely won’t be the last. However, his one-day numbers have been incredible. With changes in the leadership group, it’s important to allow time to settle things. As fans and supporters of Indian cricket, we must provide that space,” said Uthappa.
Sanju has played 16 ODIs in his career, amassing 510 runs at an impressive average of 56.67. Despite these numbers, Uthappa emphasised that Samson’s path to a consistent spot in the ODI team hinges on his ability to seize opportunities and deliver consistent performances.
Uthappa elaborated that Sanju must make the most of any opportunities he receives. Uthappa said, “Sanju is not out of contention, just like any other player. It’s only a matter of time before he gets another chance. When that opportunity comes, he will need to produce consistent performances to secure his place in the team for the long term.”
