Following the spotlight on ODIs in 2023, the focus now shifts to the shortest format with the scheduled T20 World Cup this year. The International Cricket Council (ICC) has tentatively set the tournament dates from June 4 to June 30 in the West Indies and the United States of America (USA). With this World Cup, 20 teams are going to play in the prestigious event for the first time.
Although the schedule is awaiting finalization, former England captain Nasser Hussain has already offered notable predictions for the upcoming event, including highlighting the player to keep an eye on.
Hussain believed that Suryakumar Yadav, the number one T20I batter in the world from India, is the player to keep an eye on in the upcoming T20 World Cup. According to Hussain, while Suryakumar may seem a bit clueless in 50-overs cricket, the swashbuckling batter is a “freak” who excels in the shortest format and is poised to make a significant impact.
“The person for the world to watch out for at the moment in T20 is Suryakumar Yadav,” Hussain was quoted as saying by the ANI.
“I mean, the bloke is a freak. The cliche of Mr. 360, but some of the shots he plays… and he is a bit of a freak because in fifty-overs cricket, he doesn’t quite know when to go, when not to go, what to do. But in T20 cricket, he absolutely knows what to do every single time almost, and it’s a fun game, T20 cricket and watching SKY, that is absolutely fun,” the 55-year-old concluded.
Since making his T20I debut for India in 2021, Suryakumar has emerged as one of the best batters in T20Is, notching up four centuries and 17 fifties in 60 matches. His stellar performances earned him the No.1 spot in the ICC Rankings for T20I batters in 2022, a position he has maintained. However, Suryakumar has faced challenges replicating the same impact in ODIs.
