Erik ten Hag and Thomas Tuchel are at different stages of their managerial careers right now.
Life at Manchester United has not been easy for Ten Hag, with structural issues at Old Trafford denting any realistic ambitions of winning a first Champions League title since 2008 despite managing a trophy and a Premier League finish of third in his debut season.
Tuchel is only in his first full season in charge of Bayern Munich, having arrived in March 2023. The former Chelsea boss has had less time to shape his squad to his liking than Ten Hag, but he certainly has the better working conditions out of the two right now.
They are sure to face each other more in the future, but here is the complete head-to-head record so far between Ten Hag and Tuchel.
The first meeting between Ten Hag and Tuchel as coaches took place in the early stages of the 2023/24 Champions League season.
Man Utd and Ten Hag hadn’t enjoyed a good start to the season and while Bayern weren’t dominating the early rounds of the Bundesliga as usual, the Germans were firm favourites to take all three points in this first group game of the season.
Man Utd started well but still found themselves 2-0 down at half-time with Leroy Sane and Serge Gnabry scoring. The second half started perfectly for the Red Devils as they built up a head of steam with Rasmus Hojlund netting his first Champions League goal.
That charge was abruptly brought to a halt when an extremely unfortunate handball decision went against Man Utd, allowing Harry Kane to make it 3-1 and kill Ten Hag’s side’s momentum.
United never recovered but a late flurry of goals meant they only incurred defeat by one goal in a 4-3 loss.
