Erik ten Hag vs Eddie Howe: Complete head-to-head record

Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag and Newcastle United boss Eddie Howe quickly became well acquainted with one another after facing off for the first time in 2022.

With Newcastle continuing their ascent up the Premier League table, meetings with Man Utd have become mighty occasions.

In fact, we have already seen a cup final contested between these two coaches, such has been the rise of their stock in recent seasons.

Here is the complete head-to-head record between Ten Hag and Howe.

Bruno Fernandes

The first meeting between the duo was far from a classic. There was nothing to separate Man Utd and Newcastle in a goalless draw at Old Trafford, with another Cristiano Ronaldo hissy fit the biggest talking point.

Marcus Rashford spurned the chance to steal a late victory when sending his simple header over the bar, while Joelinton had struck the woodwork for the Magpies.

However, in the end, a bore draw was probably a fair result.

Ten Hag’s second meeting with Howe saw him lift his first trophy as Man Utd boss, with the Red Devils beating an underwhelming Newcastle side 2-0 in the Carabao Cup final.

Two goals within six first-half minutes from Casemiro and Rashford handed Man Utd the club’s first piece of silverware since 2017, with Newcastle producing a subpar performance under the weight of expectation at Wembley.

The Magpies lacked a cutting edge in the final third, while they also had to rely on the much-maligned Loris Karius between the sticks amid a goalkeeping injury crisis. Despite being blameless for the final scoreline, it was more cup final heartbreak for the former Liverpool man.

It took under two months for Newcastle to get their revenge on Man Utd, beating Ten Hag’s side 2-0 at Old Trafford in a commanding Premier League victory at St James’ Park.

David de Gea was in inspired form in the first half to deny the hosts, but Joe Willock eventually managed to break the deadlock after converting Allan Saint-Maximin’s headed pass.

Callum Wilson put more gloss on the scoreline with a lovely header with two minutes of normal time remaining, sending Newcastle temporarily above Man Utd in the table.

In only their second victory over Man Utd at Old Trafford since 1972, Newcastle found themselves on the right side of a Carabao Cup encounter with the Red Devils.

A woeful Man Utd were dismantled by a much-changed Newcastle side, Miguel Almiron giving the Magpies the lead with his 28th-minute strike. Lewis Hall’s fine left-footed volley doubled the Magpies’ lead just before the break with Old Trafford stunned.

Despite a slightly improved second-half performance, Willock was on hand to dash any hopes of a comeback after 60 minutes with a Newcastle third. Man Utd barely offered a flicker of a response.
