The ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2023 in India has provided fans with many thrilling matches and moments that will be etched in their memories forever. However, for some teams, it has been a rollercoaster ride of emotions with very less to celebrate. One such team is England, who have struggled to find their rhythm and are almost on the verge of elimination.
It is worth mentioning that the defending champions have just managed to win one match of the six games that they have played so far and find themselves at the bottom of the points table.
Amidst the disappointment of England’s woeful performance, their dynamic all-rounder, Ben Stokes, recently picked the best bowler of the ODI World Cup 2023 and gave fans a glimpse into his thoughts and insights. Notably, Stokes is the skipper of the England national Test side and came out of retirement to represent England in the ODI World Cup 2023.
Stokes made his revelation during a pre-match conference before England’s clash with their traditional rivals, Australia. The 32-year-old named India’s Mohammed Shami as the best bowler of the ODI World Cup 2023 and also showered him with praise, acknowledging his phenomenal performance despite missing a few early games. Stokes even highlighted how Shami’s spell against England had contributed to their embarrassing defeat against India in Lucknow.
“I’ve played a lot of cricket against Shami; he’s a fantastic bowler, and I think we watched him last night, and they brought a stat up in a World Cup is quite phenomenal actually. He’s been obviously the bowler of the World Cup, I think,” said Stokes.
“I don’t think he’s played every game, but the way in which he’s, in every situation and every game he’s come in, it’s been incredible, the number of wickets he’s taken. He’s just found a way to be able to get wickets. Obviously, that spell against us was one of many he’s had this World Cup. Sometimes you just have to say to the opposition that you’re very good, and Mohammed Shami’s been very good throughout this whole World Cup,” the all-rounder added.
Shami’s performance in the World Cup 2023 has indeed been remarkable. He has managed to bag 14 wickets, including two five-wicket hauls. Moreover, after his recent spell against Sri Lanka, his reputation has soared even higher, making him the most successful bowler in the World Cup and solidifying his position as one of the standout performers in this tournament.
