Australia registered a 39-run victory over Oman in their opening match of the T20 World Cup 2024 at Kensington Oval in Bridgetown, Barbados. Despite the win, it was Oman’s skipper Aqib Ilyas who stole the limelight with a sensational catch to dismiss Glenn Maxwell for a first-ball duck.

Oman’s impressive start

Electing to bowl first, Oman managed to contain Australia’s aggressive batting lineup. The big-hitting trio of Travis Head (12), Mitchell Marsh (14), and Maxwell were dismissed early, with Australia struggling at 50/3 by the ninth over. Oman’s disciplined bowling put the Australians under pressure from the outset.

The standout moment of the match came when Maxwell walked in to bat. Facing Mehran Khan‘s medium pace, Maxwell attempted to push a good length delivery between cover and extra cover. The ball, however, stuck on the surface longer than Maxwell anticipated, causing him to mistime his shot.

Ilyas, positioned at catching cover, showcased extraordinary athleticism by leaping to his left and catching the ball with both hands fully extended. This remarkable catch not only dismissed Maxwell for a duck but also became a memorable moment in the ongoing global showpiece event.

Australia’s recovery

Despite Maxwell’s early dismissal, Australia managed to set a competitive target of 165 runs. Marcus Stoinis and David Warner orchestrated a crucial recovery, forming a 100-run partnership. Stoinis scored a quickfire 50 off 27 deliveries, while Warner reached his half-century in 46 balls. Warner eventually fell for 56 in the 19th over, dismissed by Kaleemullah. Tim David contributed a small but significant cameo of 9 runs off 4 balls, helping Australia reach 165.

Oman’s response and Australia’s dominant bowling

In reply, Oman struggled to keep up with the required run rate. Australia’s bowlers delivered a commanding performance, restricting Oman to 125/9 in their allotted 20 overs. Stoinis was the pick of the bowlers, claiming three wickets. Mitchell Starc, Adam Zampa and Nathan Ellis each took two wickets, ensuring a comprehensive victory for Australia.
