Bayern Munich star ruled out of Real Madrid second leg through injury

Bayern Munich have confirmed that left-back Raphael Guerreiro will miss Wednesday’s Champions League semi-final second leg against Real Madrid through injury.

Guerreiro started the first leg on the bench but came on at half-time as a central midfielder, and he played an integral role in Bayern wrestling control of the game.

Unfortunately, he managed just 17 minutes of Saturday’s clash with Stuttgart before going down with an ankle injury which forced him to leave the stadium on crutches, and Bayern have now confirmed he will sit out Wednesday’s huge clash.

“FC Bayern will have to make do without Raphael Guerreiro in the next few matches,” a club statement read.

“The Portuguese sustained a ligament and capsule injury in his ankle in Saturday’s Bundesliga match away at Stuttgart, as confirmed by a scan by the FC Bayern medical department. Guerreiro had to be subbed off in the 17th minute against Stuttgart.”

There was, however, some positive news for Bayern, who went on to confirm that Jamal Musiala trained with the team on Sunday despite picking up a knock which forced him off the field against Stuttgart.

Musiala was joined in training by centre-back Matthijs de Ligt, who has missed the last two games through injury.

The tie is delicately poised after a 2-2 draw in the first leg. Bayern fell behind to a strike from Vinicius Junior but roared into a lead after half-time thanks to goals from Leroy Sane and Harry Kane, who is now just one goal behind Wayne Rooney in the battle to become the highest scoring Englishman in Champions League history.

A late Vinicius penalty earned a share of the spoils for Madrid, who have progressed in 18 of the 19 European ties in which they did not lose the first leg. On the other hand, Bayern have been eliminated in four of their five ties that began with a first-leg draw.
