The Dr DY Patil Sports Academy in Navi Mumbai witnessed a clinical display of cricket as Australia Women bounced back in style, defeating India Women by six wickets in the second T20I of the Australia Women tour of India 2023-24. The victory of Australia keeps the series alive (1-1) and sets the stage for an exciting showdown in the upcoming matches.
Winning the toss and opting to bowl first, Australia Women put the Indian batters under pressure right from the start. The decision paid off as the Indian Women’s team managed to post a modest total of 130-8 in their allotted 20 overs.
Deepti Sharma emerged as the lone warrior for India, scoring 30 runs off 27 deliveries. However, she received little support from her teammates, with only Smriti Mandhana and Richa Ghosh managing to cross the 20-run mark. The Australian bowlers showcased their dominance, with Georgia Wareham, Kim Garth, and Annabel Sutherland each picking up two wickets. Wareham was particularly impressive, conceding only 17 runs in her spell, while Garth and Sutherland contributed with figures of 2/27 and 2/18, respectively.
Chasing a target of 131, Australia got off to a solid start, with openers Alyssa Healy and Beth Mooney stitching a crucial 51-run partnership. Healy contributed 26 runs off 21 deliveries, while Mooney scored 20 runs from 29 balls. Ellyse Perry played a crucial role in the middle order, adding 34 runs to guide Australia to victory.
Deepti, who had impressed with the bat earlier, showcased her all-round abilities by taking two wickets for just 22 runs in her allotted four overs. However, her efforts were not enough to prevent Australia from reaching the target with six wickets in hand and as many balls to spare.
The Australian Women’s team exhibited a disciplined and clinical performance, showing their depth in both batting and bowling departments. The win in the second T20I not only keeps them alive in the series but also sends a strong message to the Indian team as they head into the series decider.
Ellyse Perry marks her 300th appearance for Australia in cricket (to go with her 18 appearances for Australia in football) by helping guide her team over the line in a tricky run chase against India. Without a doubt, one of the all time greats. We’re lucky she picked cricket… pic.twitter.com/gmWzdUEMAa
