As the much-awaited IPL 2025 mega auction, scheduled for November 24 and 25 in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, approaches, franchises are strategizing to secure impactful players.
Among the most sought-after names is Trent Boult, the experienced New Zealand pacer who was released by Rajasthan Royals (RR) at the IPL 2025 retention. Known for his ability to swing the ball and perform under pressure, Boult’s IPL credentials make him an enticing prospect for several teams.
1. Mumbai Indians (MI)
The Mumbai Indians are well-positioned to chase Boult in the auction. Known for their preference for left-arm pacers, Mumbai’s setup could benefit significantly from Boult’s proven skills with the new ball. His ability to create early breakthroughs aligns perfectly with Mumbai’s strategy to dominate powerplays.
Boult’s previous stint with Mumbai in 2020 and 2021 was highly successful, culminating in a pivotal role during their 2020 IPL title victory. During that season, he formed a formidable new-ball partnership with Jasprit Bumrah, securing 25 wickets at an economy rate of 7.97.
With Bumrah expected to be fully fit for IPL 2025, Mumbai’s bowling attack would gain immense flexibility by bringing Boult back. His presence could allow Bumrah to operate as a death-overs specialist, a strategy that worked wonders in the past. Given MI’s history of retaining successful former players, they are likely to aggressively bid for Boult.
2. Punjab Kings (PBKS)
Punjab Kings may turn to Trent Boult to add power in their fast-bowling line-up. Having released left-arm pacer Arshdeep Singh, the franchise faces the challenge of filling this void with an equally impactful bowler. Boult’s ability to exploit swinging conditions and deliver in high-pressure moments makes him a perfect fit.
Punjab’s home grounds in Mohali and Dharamsala are known for favouring swing bowlers due to their conditions. Boult’s expertise with the new ball, combined with his experience of over 100 IPL wickets, could be instrumental in improving Punjab’s bowling performance.
Moreover, PBKS have struggled in the past with consistency in their bowling attack. Bringing in a player of Boult’s caliber would not only strengthen their squad but also provide leadership to young bowlers in the team.
3. Rajasthan Royals
Despite releasing Boult, Rajasthan Royals are expected to re-enter the bidding war to reacquire him. During his time with the Royals, Boult was a cornerstone of their bowling unit, often delivering in critical moments.
Releasing Boult could have been a strategic move to free up funds, with the intention of re-signing him at the auction. His familiarity with the Royals’ setup and his contributions in past seasons make him a natural fit for their plans. If their budget allows, Rajasthan is likely to prioritize securing Boult to maintain a strong bowling lineup alongside their other key players.
Boult’s ability to deliver impactful performances, particularly in powerplay and death overs, makes him a critical asset for any team aiming for balance and depth in their bowling department.
